What Is Microneedling?

While microneedling might sound daunting, it’s one of the most effective cosmetic procedures for reducing acne, scars, dark spots, wrinkles and large pores. As the name suggests, it involves using small, sterilised needles to prick the skin and stimulate collagen production.

At our skin clinic in Milton Keynes, patients who undergo microneedling are often left with smoother and firmer skin after just one session. If you’re intrigued by this treatment or simply wondering, ‘What is microneedling?’ keep reading as our experts walk you through everything you need to know.

What Is Microneedling & How Can It Help Me?

The concept of microneedling dates back to 1995, when German dermatologist Ernst Kromayer used dental burs to treat scars and hyperpigmentation. Since then, the treatment has grown tremendously in popularity and significantly increased in quality. At Lasaderm, we’ve helped countless patients wind back the years and restore their skin to a more youthful condition through microneedling. Below, we’ll discuss how you, too, could benefit from this minimally invasive treatment.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Sometimes, your skin needs a little encouragement to restore and revitalise itself. Microneedling uses this premise to reduce a number of skin issues, including acne, wrinkles and scarring. It involves using sterilised microneedles to create tiny punctures in the skin, stimulating the production of collagen-rich tissue. That is why microneedling is often referred to as collagen induction therapy. Research from The National Library of Medicine found that microneedling is an effective and safe treatment method for a wide range of skin conditions. In fact, a 2021 review found evidence to suggest microneedling can even help promote hair growth in those with alopecia, but more research is needed to support these findings.

The Process

At Lasaderm, we’ve provided microneedling for years to help patients with anti-aging, acne and scarring. Here’s what you can expect when you choose us:

  • Consultation: Before your treatment, you’ll discuss your situation and goals with one of our skin specialists. They’ll advise you on the best course of treatment and walk you through what you can expect.
  • Micro-Injury Creation: Your specialist will use a sterilised Dermapen® to penetrate the epidermis and reach the top of the dermis. This will create controlled micro-injuries without causing significant damage to the outer skin layer.
  • Stimulation Of Healing: The micro-injuries will trigger the body’s natural healing response. Firstly, platelets will gather at the puncture sites. This creates a mild inflammatory response that clears debris and prepares the site for new tissue growth. Then, fibroblasts are mobilised to create new collagen and elastin fibres. These essential proteins help restore the skin’s firmness and elasticity.
  • Remodelling & Rejuvenation: The newly formed collagen network strengthens the skin’s structure, leading to improved texture, tone, and overall appearance.

Microneedling Benefits

A big reason behind microneedling’s growing popularity is its extensive list of benefits. It suits all skin types, involves minimal discomfort and downtime, and helps reduce the appearance of many skin conditions. These are some of the key benefits of microneedling:

Diminishes Fine Lines & Wrinkles

  • Collagen Boost: The increased collagen production fills in fine lines and plumps the skin, smoothing out wrinkles.
  • Elasticity Improvement: Enhanced elastin levels restore skin’s suppleness, reducing sagging.

Reduces Appearance Of Scarring

  • Scar Tissue Remodelling: Microneedling breaks down old scar tissue, promoting the formation of new skin cells.
  • Texture Refinement: Helps to even out pitted or uneven skin surfaces caused by acne scarring.

Reduces Hyperpigmentation & Sun Damage

  • Melanin Regulation: Promotes even distribution of melanin, helping to fade dark spots and patches.
  • Enhanced Renewal: Accelerates skin cell turnover, shedding damaged skin cells and revealing brighter skin beneath.

Shrinks Enlarged Pores

  • Structural Support: Strengthening the surrounding collagen can reduce the size of enlarged pores.
  • Sebum Regulation: It may help balance oil production and contribute to pore size reduction.

Before and after

Does Microneedling Hurt?

Microneedling may be slightly uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t hurt. It is generally considered more comfortable than other treatments like chemical peels. Your dermatologist will adjust the depth of the Dermapen® to suit the depth of your epidermis and dermis. This will prevent the needles from going too deep and causing significant pain. At Lasaderm, our specialists will apply a numbing cream to the face before treatment begins to minimise any discomfort. While the microneedling is happening, you may feel a slight vibration or light pressure. It is worth noting that certain areas, like the forehead or upper lip, may be more sensitive.

You can expect the entire treatment to last between 30 minutes and an hour. Once finished, the skin may become red and feel tight or swollen, similar to a mild sunburn. This is a normal reaction and typically settles down within 24 to 72 hours. We recommend applying soothing balms and serums to alleviate discomfort. What to Expect After Microneedling

Cosmetic treatments are all about the results, so here’s what you can expect following your microneedling procedure:

Immediate Post-Treatment

  • Appearance: Skin may look flushed, and pinpoint bleeding might occur during the procedure, which is normal.
  • Sensations: Mild stinging or tightness may be felt but typically resolves quickly.

Short-Term Healing (Days 1-3)

  • Redness & Sensitivity: Skin may remain slightly red and sensitive. Gentle care is essential.
  • Possible Shedding: Light peeling or flaking may occur as the skin renews itself.

Mid-Term Healing (Days 4-7)

  • Improvement Begins: Initial improvements in texture and hydration may become noticeable.
  • Resuming Normal Activities: You can usually return to your full skincare and makeup routine unless advised otherwise.

Long-Term Results (Weeks to Months)

  • Progressive Enhancement: Collagen remodelling continues, with skin steadily improving in firmness and elasticity.
  • Cumulative Effects: Each session builds upon the last, with significant improvements often observed after multiple treatments.

How Long After Microneedling Can I Wear Makeup?

Appropriate aftercare is the best way to maximise the results of your treatment. So, we recommend avoiding makeup entirely for the first 24 hours following your treatment. This helps avoid further irritation while your skin responds to the micro punctures left by the needles. After 24 hours, you can begin to wear makeup as long as there is no visible redness or irritation. Try to use mineral-based products that are free from irritants and fragrances.

In the days following your treatment, stick to gentle cleansers and moisturisers. These will help keep your skin hydrated and free from bacteria. Steer clear of retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C serums until the skin has fully healed, which usually takes 5-7 days. Be sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, as the skin is more susceptible to UV damage after microneedling.

At Lasaderm, we’re committed to making our treatments as accessible as possible. That’s why our microneedling starts from £200 per session, and you can book three sessions for just £550.
